Chemistry is essential in every sphere of life. It is necessary for meeting our basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, health etc. Total environment is also dependent on chemistry. Students of Chemistry are therefore supposed to be aware of various aspects of the subject, apart from only their syllabus of the curriculum. Department of chemistry, Vijaygarh Jyotish Ray College, always encourages their students to participate in different workshops and seminars which help them to have an immense knowledge regarding various fields of chemistry and make the subject more interesting and application based. Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI), Jadavpur, Kolkata, is a renowned research institute (under Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, India) conducts Skill Development Program for students’ time to time. Our students participated in different workshops organized by CGCRI Kolkata. The highly experienced faculty members of the institute help the students understand the way of handling various useful instruments and gave a clear concept of the working principles of those instruments. Our students got an opportunity to experience the following: UV-VIS Spectrometer. AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy). ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectra) by which, concentration of various ions like Na+, K+, Ca+2, Al+3, Fe+3 etc. can be determined. Ion-Meter, by which Fluoride ion concentration exclusively can be measured. Turbidity-Meter, by which turbidity of any water sample may be measured. Other than the above instruments, interesting experiments were shown to the students and also given the opportunity to perform the experiments individually e.g., detection of Arsenic in any water sample was made to learn with colorimetric testing by mixing specific chemicals and observing the color change. Therefore, by encouraging our students to attend such programs, our Department actually help our students to rejuvenate student life in spite of struggling with their normal day to day conventional learning processes.
Dissertations are an important method of demonstrating that you can identify a topic of concern to the field, and read, understand, and incorporate the relevant literature into a new research question to be investigated. Students will be taking dissertation in their final semester to specialize in an area that they have previously covered in class, providing the opportunity to delve deeper into an area that interests you. In contrast to taught modules, the dissertation gives them entire creative authority over the subject matter and course of your investigation. Students will start to think about unique concepts that they feel could be used in practice. Students are motivated to opt for Dissertation Project Work in 6th Semester instead of taking polymer chemistry which remain as alternative to dissertation in UG CEMA Syllabus. Dissertation allows Students to develop their Research, problem-solving Project Management and Numerical Skills. Writing a Dissertation expands one’s Subject knowledge along with rational and reasoning skills. A clear, structured, concise and well-planned dissertation captures the attention of the readers across various platforms.
