The Department of History of Vijaygarh Jyotish Ray College is lively as well as one of the dynamic departments which was first introduced in 1951 in response to the increasing demand of the local students. Subsequently the department was upgraded itself with the introduction of the Honours course in 2000. From the very beginning of its journey the department has been guided by duly qualified and sincere faculties. Apart from regular teaching, the department engages itself in activities such as organizing Students’ Seminars, National and State Seminars for faculties, Special Lecture Series for the students, Cultural Functions and Educational Visits. The department also organizes innovative teaching learning techniques beyond the merely traditional chalk and talk, like the interesting interactive sessions between teachers and students, Peer Teaching Programmes where students take the challenge to teach their peer group and usage of the audio-visual medium to make the teaching more interesting. The department takes sincere effort to mentor the students class wise as well as individually. Regular remedial classes are taken by the teachers of the department of both the Honours and General students to ponder additional initiative and effort to solve the difficulties the students usually face after the class room lecture on each topic. Most of the alumni of this department are well placed in various courses of higher learning and services, both private and government sector.

All the teachers are working heart and soul to raise the standard of the department at its peak, to thrive as the best in the college and one day one of the best departments in the college as well as among all the affiliated colleges of the University of Calcutta. They have the vision of opening Master of Arts in History in the near future.

About students:

The students come from the poor economic background even some of them are first generation learners. But the zeal and the enthusiasm they show in class are beyond words. They are working hard to rise above all economic and social stigma and their active participation is a constant source of inspiration for the teachers.

Teacher- student relationship:

Respect is reciprocal, and this is the ideology of the Department of History. The teachers constantly work together to inspire and motivate the students to bring out their talents in studies and different other fields with not only classroom teaching, smart classes, educational tours, remedial classes but also constant mentoring and counselling as and when needed.

The department has a cultural subgroup to bring out the hidden talents of the students which often organises freshers welcome and farewell programme inside the department. The teachers of the Department of the History try to teach the students - “it’s not where you start or even what happens to you along the way that’s important. What is important is that you persevere and never give up on yourself”.

Motto of the Department:

Teachers and students who are crazy enough to think they can transform the department to its best, are the ones who do. We believe that Department of History is worth excelling and our belief, energy and positivity will be able to make this dream come true one day.
