Our daily activities are primarily based on common sense or what we have learnt from others or what we have learnt through personal experience or observation. However, conflicting theories and situation based varied outcomes had always been a drawback of such approach. Most importantly, common sense based approaches may overlook the impact of external factors which may contribute to what is observed. Carefully organized and controlled research enables testing and subsequently comparing different theories and approaches, explore different methods and learn from other people’s experience. Research can be defined as “a systematic, controlled, empirical and critical investigation of hypothetical propositions about the presumed relations among natural phenomena”. It also enables them to rule out or at least consider external factors which might influence their results.

Scientific research as a career option is not only highly rewarding professionally but also one of the most ideal platforms to design technologies that someone wants around. Research as a profession is for those who want to transform tomorrow‘s technologies and want to create life-changing technologies. Research in arts and humanities provides high-level skills which can make a significant contribution to many different areas of the economy and society. Research now-a day is considered to be an integral part of higher education and students in large number are considering it as their career option.

In the last century research used to be undertaken by scientists and researchers in specialized institutes and few premium educational institutes in India. However, from the beginning of the twenty first century, government both at the center and at the state level is promoting research activities in educational institutions. Various schemes are often announced; where in faculties at various stages of their career are provided with funds for carrying out research. The University Grants Commission has provision for funding minor and major projects proposed to be carried out by faculties both at college and University level. Several other funding agencies like Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) often announces for proposal calls for projects to be funded by them.

Since, Vijaygarh Jyotish Ray College runs a post graduation course in Microbiology, for many years a research environment had already been developed though at basic scale. Often post- graduate students were guided by faculties for their post graduate dissertations. Faculties from other departments often express their interest to carry out research. In order to promote research among faculties and develop a research environment in the institution, the college administration framed a ‘Research and Guidance Cell’, whose primary aims are:

• To promote excellence in research among faculties and students.

• To develop relationship with research institutions and research organizations.

• To encourage and guide departments in organizing seminars, conferences, workshops etc.

• To motivate and guide professors to conduct research activities like paper presentation, project work etc.

• To motivate students also to take part in research activity.

 

This cell also ensures that faculties be able to provide guidance and mentorship to students at Post Graduate level as well as PhD aspirants.
