Overview

Introduced in 1978 as a general course and later upgraded into honors course in 1996, the department is staffed with the duly qualified and experienced teachers (7) that always come to the help of students with their advice and knowledge. The faculty members engaged in their respective areas of research bring to the advantage of the students the fruits of their engagement. Students are variously enabled by the teaching methods spanning from the traditional to the audio-visual with the result that they both perform academically and professionally. This is possible on account of several factors- a dedicated faculty and supporting staff, adequate laboratory and a decent library.

About the Department

Vijoygarh Jyotish Ray College was founded in 1950 under the affiliation of The University of Calcutta. From the onset of the establishment of the college, the chemistry department has been an integral part of the college and considered as a department of good repute. Chemistry as a subject of study was introduced as a general course level from the very beginning of the college. Later, Honour’s course was introduced in 1996. From the very onset, the Department has continued to attract a large number of students every year. Situated in the quiet and homely atmosphere of Bijoygarh area, it has easily accessible transport connectivity towards neighboring Jadavpur University and world-famous Research Institutes like Indian Association for the Cultivation of Sciences (IACS), Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) etc. So, our students and faculties always have the privilege to interact with reputed teachers and researchers to enhance their respective skills. Thus, the department has created a niche. Our students mostly come from rural and semi-rural backgrounds, yet their performance has always been satisfactory and consistent.

Department has been upgrading its teaching standard continuously through participating in various programs like orientation courses, refresher courses, workshops, symposia, etc. The department has its own seminar library for the use of the teachers and the students of the department. The department is well equipped with an adequate number of equipment, modern instruments, and chemicals required to facilitate the theoretical and practical classes. It has been the endeavor of the department to maintain a close relation with students to ensure their all-round development.
