Dr. Shilajit Barua, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, Vijaygarh Jyotish Ray College, Kolkata, had research and teaching experience in Microbiology in general and Microbial Ecology in particular for about 15 years. He had carried out his Ph.D. in Agricultural Microbiology. He had published his findings in several peer-reviewed journals like the Indian Journal of Microbiology, Microbiological Research, Journal of Pure and Applied Microbiology, etc. His teaching arena includes virology, environmental microbiology, antimicrobials and chemotherapy, and industrial microbiology. Dr. Barua had completed three research projects funded by UGC, SERB, and UGC-DAE CSR. His current research interest includes heavy metal absorbing biofilm, community genomics of arsenic transforming populations in aquifers, and other aspects of applied microbiology. He had published eight (8) chapters in internationally and nationally published books and 16 publications in national and international journals. Currently, 5 research scholars are carrying out research work under the supervision of Dr. Barua, one of them has been already registered for PhD at University of Calcutta and further two of them (one being CSIR-JRF) qualified RET conducted by Department of Microbiology, University of Calcutta and are about to get registered. Till date 16 post graduate students had completed their summer internship projects under the guidance of Dr. Barua.
