Title: Micellization behavior of sodium dodecyl sulfate in different electrolyte media

Project Guide: Dr. S Banerjee (RKM VC College)

      PROJECT ABSTRACT:

The effects of polar solvents such as dioxane & DMF on the micellization of Anionic surfactant in water have been investigated as a function of the co solvent content in themixed solvent using conductance measurements. The addition of dioxane to water causes micellar disruption, which is attributed to lower hydrocarbon- solvent interfacial tension and a reduction in the solvophobic effect, while the progressive increase of DMF in water-DMF mixed solvent reduces the hydration of surfactant (SDS) head groups and induces smaller surfactant surface areas, which in turn causes micellar growth. These basic findings can be used to tune the surfactant properties for end application .

It was observed that in the presence of urea influenced hydrophobic effect which is considered as the driving force of micelle formation. When the concentration of urea increased, the value of CMC is increased.

Addition of phenol, glucose showed sharp decrease in CMC. It was found that increasing the amount of phenol, decreased the value of CMC markedly as compare to glucose. The decreasing trend of CMC was due to action of phenol as a co solute which can greatly increase the solubility of non-polar additives in ionic SDS solutions.
