Department of philosophy is one of the oldest department of the college, constituted by a dedicated team of faculties. Students are given a high standard of academic support. Undergraduate program in philosophy has been designed by (University of Calcutta) to provide students with a strong fundamental knowledge in the subject covering a wide range of texts, philosophical ideas, theories, logic and ethics. The course equips students for further study and research in the subject. Students are encouraged to develop their own skills for independent and analytical thinking. Strategies of teaching include lecture method, audio-visual classes, seminars, special lectures, special classes and open house discussions.
Faculty members of the department attend and make presentations at National and International level seminars on regular basis. Some of these presentations have been converted into publications. All the faculty members take maintaining classes for the poor and weak students from time-to-time. Faculties also take responsibilities for arranging departmental educational tour to enhance their knowledge.
Courses
The three-year undergraduate honours programme in philosophy is divided into six semesters. The syllabus in each semester introduces the students to focus on critical thinking and approaches. Continuous class assessment is an integral part of the curriculum. Apart from these activities, internal and tutorial assessment in each semester for each paper help them to have a clear and distinct knowledge in the subject. Over three years the programme introduces the students to major Indian and western philosophical theories, applied ethics, social philosophy, logic and much more.
