Introduced in 1965 as a General course and subsequently upgraded into the Honours course in 1996 in response to the growing demand to pursue the course, the department is ably managed by the duly qualified and experienced teachers (5) with research experience substantiated by articles published in peer reviewed journals. The department has been extremely alive to the new ways and techniques of pedagogy ranging from the traditional classroom teaching to the interactive seminars, debates with the help of audio-visual. Students prepared by such a department live up to the expectation both in their academic and professional life. The department regularly organizes students support programmes such as socially relevant workshops, educational excursion and publishes wall magazines. The department as suggested by the last NAAC peer team to open its PG is making an effort in this direction.
