  Developmental Activities of Vijaygarh Jyotish Ray College  

-A Short Report

Vijaygarh Jyotish Ray College was founded in 1950 exclusively by the refugees from erstwhile East Bengal, now Bangladesh, has experienced a phenomenal development. The college, beginning on a humble note has sailed through the years into the millennium. In fact the college authority has been taking all the necessary steps to ensure an all round development for the interest of the student community. Some of them are stated below :-

(1) On the basis of approval of the University of Calcutta we have introduced Honours courses in as many as thirteen subjects namely, Physics, chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Bengali, English, Education, History, Economics, Political Science, Philosophy and Accountancy. Journalism, Physiology, Mathematics are also being taught as General subjects.

(2) We have opened M.Sc.(Microbiology) since 2005 Dr. Suranjan Das, Ex Pro-vice-Chancellor (Academic) Calcutta University, Dr. Anandadev Mukhopadhyay, Ex-Vice-Chancellor, Vidyasagar University, Dr. Dhrubajyoti Chattopadhyay, Dean of Science, Calcutta University, Dr. Bhaskar Saha, 'Bhatnagar' award honoured Scientist and many distinguished scholars and personalities were present in the inauguration Ceremony.

(3) A sophisticated new laboratory with modern equipments for M.Sc.(Microbiology) course has been opened. The other Science laboratories have been renovated and enriched by the inclusion of sophisticated updated equipments.

(4) On the basis of the approval of the University of Calcutta we have opened a N.S.S. Unit in our college which has been rendering yeoman's service to the society since its inception. Social service activities are being organized regularly by our N.S.S. Unit under the leadership of Programme Officers where students, teachers and non-teaching staff work in collaboration with the members of the Students' Union. Usually the regular programme of work include Campus Cleaning, Room Cleaning, Sale of T.B. Seals, Blood Donation Camp, Health Check Up Camps, Briksharopan etc. Besides, the N.S.S. Unit took initiative to contribute for the distressed people in the tea gardens at Jalpaiguri and donated money towards the Relief Fund for Tsunami.

(5) We have also introduced N.C.C. in our college and the N.C.C. Unit of the college has also earned praise from many quarters. Some cadets have appeared and passed the N.C.C 'B' Certificate Examination. Our cadets attended various N.C.C. camps.
(6) We have formed Vijaygarh Jyotish Ray College Research & Development Centre in the college as a Registered Society. An Ex-Deputy-Director of IICB has been functioning as Honorary Director of the Research Centre. A number of eminent scientists have already joined the Research Centre.

(7) Six (6) big rooms have been constructed which in its turn will be expected to mitigate the problem of scarcity of class-rooms to some extent.

(8) We have constructed two spacious auditoriums which were named “Vidyasagar Sabhakaksha" and “Rabindra Bhavan”.

(9) After renovation our Computer Centre has been functioning smoothly and now some new some computers have been installed for practical classes of various departments and other miscellaneous purposes.

(10) The Govt. of West Bengal has already allotted more than 16 Kattahs of land to the college in order to enable us to construct hostels for students of our college.

(11) We have started Distance Education System Courses on the following subjects under the Rabindra Bharati University.

c) History
d) Education
e) Political Science
f) Sanskrit
g) Environmental Studies
